The topic of today is the Mozy Online Backup Service

mozy review
Specifically I will provide a Mozy Review for those interested in using this online backup service. I have been using Mozy online backup for about 7 months now and I will describe my personal experience with the service.

This review will cover any questions you might have about the service or hesitations about going with Mozy for your online backup needs. Its crazy how many online backup services there are to choose from and it really makes things tough for us, the consumers.

When I began searching for an online backup service last September I had a few requirements in mind. I wanted to be certain the service fulfilled the following requirements...

*Simple and Easy to Use

*Files should be Encrypted and Secure

*Backups are done Automatically

With these requirements in mind I began my search for a suitable service that would meet these needs. I immediately stumbled upon Mozy within my first few Google searches and was impressed with what they have to offer.

There are two options to choose from when using Mozy; MozyHome, and MozyPro. You can also use a free edition of Mozy with limited storage space of 2gb. I used this version to get a feel for Mozy and see if it was as impressive as people and other sites are claiming.

Price of the Mozy Online Backup Service

As I mentioned earlier there are two different options to choose from when using Mozy.

MozyHome is priced at:

Unlimited use $4.95 per month

MozyPro is priced at:

Desktop Licenses: $3.95 + $0.50/GB per month
Server Licenses: $6.95 + $0.50/GB per month

In comparison to other online backup serivces, Mozy is one of the lowest you can use. You just can't beat the Mozy home service for $4.95 a month with unlimited usage. I will explain the differences between MozyHome and MozyPro later on in this review, for now we will move on to how Mozy works.

How Mozy Works...

The process is simple, the first step is to visit Mozy's homepage and download the software. Than you select the files you wish to backup and tell Mozy when and how often to do so. Its incredibly easy which was a big part of what attracted me to Mozy in the first place.

Sure you can back up your files on an external hard drive, but who wants to take the time to do this everyday. Mozy automates this entire process for you keeping your information safe and protected while saving you the time. During the backup process, your files are first protected with military grade encryption and than sent to a state of the art data center using a secure 128-bit SSL connection.

This same technology is actually being used for the majority of online banking transactions today.

MozyPro vs MozyHome: Feature Comparison Chart

Feature MozyHomeMozyPro

As you can see MozyHome covers most people's needs. The pro version really stands out with the 24 hour technical support and the pay as you go system. This is nice for any business trying to keep upfront costs low. Putting together this comparison chart makes me realize how great of a value Mozy really is. Its definitely a nice list of features for an online backup service, especially for the price of the home version.

About Mozy

Mozy was founded in 2005 and they currently have over 1 billion customers. At least 50,000 of these are business backing up 25+ petabytes of information across the globe.

They are actually owned by a Fortune 500 company; EMC Corporation. Its nice backing up your files with a company that you know isn't going anywhere. There are committed to providing a backup service that fulfills the following areas...

You shouldn't have to think about backup.
Backup should be set up once, and then work automatically.

Your files should be encrypted.

Your backup files should be encrypted and stored in a secure, remote location that's only accessible to you—from anywhere.

Your backups should be smart.
Your backup system should be smart enough to only back up data that's not already been backed up, only back up parts of a file that have changed, and be able to back up open and locked files.

Thanks for stopping in and good luck!

Mozy vs Carbonite - The Ultimate Debate

If you want to have the right thing when it comes to securing your computer files from being lost or accidently deleted, looking for an online backup service provider is the key solution. But then again, there is a sizzling debate on what is the better provider between Mozy and Carbonite. Both of them are companies that provide the protection that any computer user wants for safety measure.

And so the ultimate debate between the two identified online backup service providers has begun: Mozy vs. Carbonite.

Mozy is an online backup tool that was founded in 2005. Formerly created by Berkeley Data Systems, Mozy is now managed by EMC subsidiary Decho Corporation. On the other hand, Carbonite has been around since 2006. Carbonite is interestingly named after the substance called carbonite which was used to freeze Han Solo in the Star Wars movie.
It is best to look at the similarities of Mozy and Carbonite. Since both are online backup tools, it is very likely for them to have similar attributes. Whether you are a Window user or a Mac user, you can gain the benefit of both Mozy and Carbonite. Both online backup tools function in the aim of guarding your data and encrypt everything using SSL (Secure Shell) before leaving your computer.

Another similarity is the use of a program that resides on your computer in order to administer the upload of your files and the automatic backup updates. This means that you can work with your computer while your system is being backed up. This is another good point about both Mozy and Carbonite: the automatic backup and the continuous uploading of your files for backup. More than everything else, both Mozy and Carbonite have services that are direct to the point for convenience.

The heat is on when we talk about the difference between Mozy and Carbonite. True enough, there is a BIG difference between the two online backup tools. It is best to be alert on looking at the best points of both.

When it comes to payment option, you can do it monthly with Mozy. Conversely, Carbonite does not have this kind of option. When it comes to customer support and technical support, you can contact Mozy anytime since it works 24/7 for its customers, while Carbonite only works during business hours (Mondays to Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST).

Mozy does not have any priority support program as compared to Carbonite. But then again, it takes some extra payment in order to be prioritized for technical and customer support for Carbonite. It is still to be taken into account that business hours system is executed by Carbonite unlike Mozy that works all-day round. Having an issue about your online backup tool is truly annoying especially because it is your files that may be at risk.

To sum it all up, this Mozy and Carbonite can be considered as reliable sources of online backup services. However, there are several negative points that Carbonite pounded. This goes to show that the edge is given to Mozy.

It is not right to handpick one provider without looking into the differences. To learn more about Mozy specifically, read this Mozy Online Backup Review for a detailed breakdown of the service along with several user reviews.
